Thanksgiving Menu Planning

When I hear those words I think tons of food, friends/family, and lots of laughing. The menu this year for us includes a ham, stuffed hen, dressing, mashed patatos & gravy, green bean casserole, rolls and an apple pie. Sometimes it's hard to come up with the perfect menu for you & your guests so here are a few tips that I go by
1. keep in mind any food allergies

2. remember the number of guests & how many options you want to give them
3. its fall, so think fall flavors (personal culture can influence this)
-desserts: pumpkin, apple, sweet patato, berries, nuts
-vegitables: corn, green beans, patatos, carrot
4. common meats are turkey, ham, hen, & even German sausages. All of them can be served to give variety or pick what your guests typically have to make them feel more at home
-ham glazes: brown sugar, honey bbq, mustard, & smoked (anything fruity is typically Christmas (going back to tip 4))
5. it is important that your sides compliment your main dishes
-simple meat/ fancier sides, fancy meat/ simple side
-flavor simple sides with spices
6. try new things, mix traditional dish up by giving someone elses recipe a go
7. the type of dressing/ stuffing shouldn't be to fancy if there are going to be alot of different foods
8. remember that you won't be able to please everyone & overall your the one who will be left with the leftovers so make sure you like everything

Roommate Series: Going Green

One of my roommates is pretty "go green", save the earth, eco-friendly and so I started recalling some of the many videos I have seen about clever uses for things or life hacks reusable items. Even without a market where you can bring your own containers, fill them, and pay by weight (bulk bin places) you can still make a few changes. There are other changes that can be made like those reusable menstrual cups for women to reduce waste from tampons or pads but in my opinion, that's not as easy of a change to make. Here are some of the easier ones I've found that require a little effort but will save particularly on plastic, some can even save you money in the long run. Another perk with making your own is that the chemicals used are what you put in them so you can make them more natural if that's also a goal for you. New Apartment

             No matter what your life situation is getting your first apartment or home can be stressful. It’s sometimes hard to remember all the things you need to pack or buy. I have compiled a list and organized the items by room. While this list is extensive it doesn’t have everything you could possibly need and it may have a bunch of stuff you don't but hopefully this puts you off to a good start.  An added practical perk to this list is that... you can print it our on some cardstock (or regular paper, it just won't be as durable), cut it by room and as you pack and check off items and using tape you can use them to label your bins, totes, or boxes. Shopping for Holiday Gift Exchanges

I'm going to take a break from my college series to talk about holiday work gift exchanges. If you work in education as I now do you will most likely have the opportunity to participate in a "Secret Santa" game. Other professional settings may have that or something similar. Some do a "White Elephant" or "Dirty Santa". Some general rules of thumb are... Keep your setting in mind working in a school for example, while we're all adults we can't exchange alcohol or adult gifts  Keep your potential recipient in mind This gift might not go to your friend that you work with but possibly anyone you work with that may not have the same since of humor or enjoy the same things as you Stick to the price cap You may be tempted to go over but there's a cap for a reason.
